Donald Trump says Israel and Lebanon agreed at White House talks to extend their ceasefire by three weeks, as the US links the move to wider Middle East de-escalation efforts

US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their ongoing ceasefire by three weeks following high-level talks at the White House.
In a statement, Trump said the meeting with senior representatives from both countries “went very well" and resulted in an agreement to prolong the fragile truce.
“We had a great meeting… they’ve agreed to an additional three weeks of ceasefire," Trump said, adding that the move could help stabilise the region.
US Pushes For Broader De-escalation
Trump indicated that the ceasefire extension is part of a wider diplomatic effort, linking it to ongoing negotiations involving Iran.
“It’ll be a wonderful thing to get this worked out simultaneously with what we’re doing in Iran," he said, suggesting parallel efforts to reduce tensions across multiple fronts in the Middle East.
The US also signalled plans to work closely with Lebanon to strengthen its security and counter threats from Hezbollah.
Fragile Truce Amid Ongoing Conflict
The ceasefire, first agreed earlier this month, was intended as a temporary halt to fighting between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, following weeks of intense cross-border violence.
Despite the truce, sporadic clashes and alleged violations have continued, raising concerns about its durability.
The conflict has caused significant casualties and displacement, with thousands affected across Lebanon and northern Israel.
Next Steps
Trump said he expects further diplomatic engagement, including hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the near future.
While the extension offers temporary relief, analysts say the situation remains volatile, and the success of the ceasefire will depend on continued US mediation and compliance by all parties involved.
