Several Democratic lawmakers escalated efforts to remove President Trump from office, citing his handling of the Iran conflict and recent public statements, reported Axios. Follow Live Updates Here

Reps. Thanedar and Jasmine Crockett sent letters to Vice President J.D. Vance and the Cabinet, urging them to invoke the 25th Amendment. Rep. John Larson introduced articles of impeachment on Tuesday, listing the Iran conflict among multiple alleged violations.

Separately, Rep. Yassamin Ansari said she plans to file articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over his role in the war.

The developments came hours after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran, just over an hour before his stated deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier in the day, Trump warned in a Truth Social post that if the deadline was not met, “a whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will."

The statement drew criticism from Democrats and some Republicans. Vice President Vance defended the administration, saying, “We’ve got tools in our toolkit that we so far haven’t decided to use." His office did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.

Numbers And Political Divide

As of Tuesday evening, more than 85 House Democrats had called for impeachment or removal, including senior leaders and lawmakers such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Most of the support came from progressive members, while moderates and lawmakers from swing districts largely focused on calls for a congressional vote on war powers related to Iran.

What Lawmakers Said

The report mentioned that Rep. Melanie Stansbury said that a last-minute ceasefire announcement does not make the President fit to serve, especially after issuing threats that could amount to war crimes.

Sen. Ed Markey said he welcomed reports of a ceasefire with Iran but asserted that Donald Trump cannot threaten war crimes without consequences. He called on Congress to reconvene immediately to stop the war and remove Trump from office

The effort to remove Trump faces significant challenges due to the need for Republican support in Congress. However, the calls signal a sharper Democratic stance ahead of the November elections.

“If the GOP doesn’t hold the House, impeachment 3.0 is coming," former Republican congressman Mark Meadows said.
