US President Donald Trump landed in China this morning. He is in China for a two-day visit, and is expected to meet the Chinese President Xi Jinping at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People at 10 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET), according to his official schedule. The meeting marks the start of a packed diplomatic programme focused on trade, technology, and global security issues.
After the first meeting, Trump and Xi Jinping are due to meet again at 6 p.m. local time for a state banquet. The evening event is part of a wider effort to combine formal diplomacy with ceremonial engagement during the visit.
Trump’s 2-Day China Visit
President Trump’s China trip is a two-day state visit in mid-May 2026, beginning with arrival on May 14. The schedule includes meetings and ceremonies across May 14 and May 15, followed by departure back to the United States.
The programme includes a formal welcome ceremony, two bilateral meetings with Xi Jinping, a visit to the Temple of Heaven, a state banquet, and a tea and working lunch. The structure of the visit combines official talks with cultural and diplomatic events in Beijing.
Day-by-Day Schedule
On May 14, Trump arrives in Beijing in the evening and is joined by the US delegation for reception and protocol formalities.
On May 14, the day begins with a formal welcome ceremony and the first bilateral meeting between President Trump and President Xi Jinping in the morning. This is followed by an afternoon visit to the Temple of Heaven. The day ends with a state banquet in the evening, bringing both leaders together in a formal setting.
On May 15, a second meeting takes place in the form of a tea and working lunch with Xi Jinping at 11:30 a.m. local time. This is followed by further economic and trade discussions, including US-China trade and investment committees. Trump is then scheduled to depart for the United States later that day.
What’s On Agenda?
Officials say the talks will focus on several major issues, including trade and a one-year tariff truce, artificial intelligence (AI) and technology matters such as semiconductor supply chains and investment, Taiwan and regional security concerns, and Iran along with wider West Asia tensions.
Other areas include potential US-China Boards of Trade or Investment, alongside broader efforts to manage economic competition and cooperation. The agenda also highlights agriculture, aircraft, and investment-related agreements as part of targeted economic discussions.
President Trump’s China agenda is focused on stabilising and managing the US-China relationship while seeking commercial and strategic gains. These include expanded market access, control discussions on technology and AI, Taiwan and regional security concerns, Iran-related diplomacy, and targeted economic agreements in sectors such as agriculture, aerospace, and investment.
The administration describes this approach as a managed relationship that maintains competition while reducing the risk of uncontrolled conflict, using trade leverage to secure market access and supply-chain security.
