The United States is considering a proposal to release up to $20 billion in frozen Iranian funds in exchange for Iran giving up its stockpile of enriched uranium, according to a report by Axios.
The proposal is part of ongoing negotiations aimed at easing tensions and moving towards a broader agreement between the US and Iran.
According to the report, under the plan, Iran would hand over its enriched uranium, including a significant quantity enriched to high levels, which has been a major concern and a centre stage for the ongoing tension in Western Asia.
The discussions are based on a draft memorandum that outlines steps such as a pause in Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities and measures linked to regional stability, including the Strait of Hormuz.
However, key differences remain. Earlier in the talks, the US had proposed releasing around $6 billion for limited use, while Iran has been seeking a much larger amount.
The issue of Iran’s frozen assets — held abroad due to sanctions — continues to be a major sticking point in negotiations.
After peace deal talks went unsuccessful between the US and Iran in Islamabad, discussions are still underway, with mediators from multiple countries involved, but no final agreement has been reached so far.
The outcome of the negotiations is seen as crucial for reducing tensions in West Asia and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.
