USTA urges broadcasters to avoid protest coverage during Donald Trump’s U.S. Open visit as he attends the Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz final at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has asked broadcasters to avoid showing any protests or crowd reactions to President Donald Trump during his planned appearance at the U.S. Open men’s singles final on Sunday, according to multiple reports.
Trump will become the first sitting U.S. president in 25 years to attend the tournament, taking in the marquee showdown between world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
A Divisive Visit to New York
The former president, who has frequently attended major sporting events, may face a mixed reception in Democratic-leaning New York City. Trump was once a regular at the Open before taking office, but in 2015 he was booed shortly after launching his presidential campaign.
According to a USTA memo obtained by The Athletic, Trump will appear on official feeds during the national anthem ceremony but broadcasters were urged to “refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the president’s attendance in any capacity."
“We regularly ask our broadcasters to refrain from showcasing off-court disruptions," USTA spokesman Brendan McIntyre confirmed. ESPN, which is televising the final, declined comment but is expected to cover Trump’s presence as it would in other sporting contexts.
Trump’s Upcoming Sports Appearances
At the Open, Trump will attend as a “client guest," organizers said, seated in a private sponsor’s suite. His visit adds another chapter to his long association with New York sports and the U.S. Open in particular.
This will not be his only sports-related appearance this month. Trump is also expected to attend the New York Yankees’ game against the Detroit Tigers on September 11, marking the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Later, he is scheduled to be present at the Ryder Cup on Long Island, one of golf’s most prestigious international competitions.
Spotlight on the Final
Sinner, 23, is aiming to become the first man since Roger Federer (2004–08) to successfully defend a U.S. Open title. On the other hand, Alcaraz, 22, last triumphed at Flushing Meadows in 2022 and is looking to reclaim the crown.
