President Donald Trump on Friday called on Congress to approve a massive $1.5 trillion defence budget for 2027, setting the stage for a major political battle over military spending as the United States confronts soaring costs from its war with Iran and expanding global security commitments.
The proposal would increase Pentagon funding by more than 40 percent in a single year, marking the sharpest rise in defence spending since World War II. The administration says the boost is needed to sustain ongoing military operations and rebuild weapons stockpiles that officials describe as severely depleted.
The request underscores the mounting financial strain of a conflict now in its fifth week. US media, citing closed-door congressional briefings, have reported that the war with Iran may be costing as much as $2 billion per day, highlighting the scale of the burden even before longer-term reconstruction and resupply expenses are taken into account.
To help pay for the expanded defence budget, the White House is proposing about $73 billion in cuts to non-defence spending, roughly a 10 percent reduction. The proposed cuts would target a range of domestic programmes, including environmental initiatives, housing assistance and education funding.
Administration officials argue that these reductions would eliminate what they describe as wasteful spending and shift certain responsibilities back to state and local governments.
Trump has presented the defence increase in urgent, wartime terms, insisting that military investment must take precedence over federal social programmes.
“It’s not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare," Trump said at a recent private event, suggesting that such responsibilities could be handled at the state level while Washington concentrates on “military protection."
