Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay’s cabinet is set for another expansion to accommodate Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) allies Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

VCK Chief Thol Thirumavallavan says they will be part of the coalition govt and said party MLA Vanni Arasu will take oath as minister at a ceremony on Friday. From IUML, AM Shah Jahan will be sworn in as the minister.

With Arasu’s entry, the number of Dalit ministers will rise to 8, the highest proportional representation for the community in any Tamil Nadu cabinet so far.

Earlier today, Vijay accommodated 23 new legislators, including two from Congress, setting a history of sorts where the national party became a part of the government in Tamil Nadu for the first time in about 60 years, after losing out to the DMK in 1967.

Barring senior leader and Revenue Minister K A Sengottaiyan, a former AIADMK veteran, all the other ministers, including the chief minister, are first-time MLAs and ministers.
