Tamil Nadu government formation: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay received a boost to his efforts to form the government in Tamil Nadu on Saturday after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) extended an “unconditional support" to the party.

The VCK had reportedly sought the Deputy Chief Minister post amid a political deadlock in the state as Vijay failed to reach the magic number of 118 to form the government, even after meeting Governor RV Arlekar three times in three days.

However, the VCK formally extended support to Vijay, ending days of uncertainty and intense negotiations. TVK general secretary Adhav Arjuna showed a letter from the VCK ‘extending support’ to the party on government formation.

“Under the instructions of our Party President Thol. Thirumavalavan, I, Vanni Arasu, the Leader of the Legislature Party of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, on behalf of our two Members of Legislative Assembly, do hereby convey our unconditional support to the TVK," read the VCK’s letter.

Soon afterwards, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also extended support to the TVK after initially siding with the DMK. The party formally conveyed its “unconditional support" to the TVK for the government formation.

Here’s How Vijay’s Numbers Line Up

The TVK had won 108 seats out of the total 234, but with Vijay winning from two seats, he would have to vacate one of them – effectively reducing TVK’s tally to 107. The Congress ditched a long-standing alliance with the DMK to extend the support of five MLAs to the party.

The CPI and CPI(M), who won two seats each, extended their “unconditional support" to TVK on Friday, taking the tally to 116, just short of the majority mark required to form the government.

After the VCK extended support to TVK, the tally has now reached 118, just enough to prove a majority. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also extended support to Vijay’s party, taking the overall party to 120.

The numbers are enough for the TVK to form the government. The attention will now shift to how Vijay manages a coalition government with a razor-thin majority for the next five years. Even the rebellion of a couple of MLAs could put the ‘Jana Nayagan’ under serious pressure and force him to scramble for more allies.

Several of these parties have also extended “external support" to the TVK, making it clear that they would support the DMK on critical issues. This strategic flexibility could also increase pressure on Vijay to accommodate some of the opposition’s key demands.
