Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir on Friday as security agencies issued a high alert over a possible terror plot by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) targeting Delhi.

While officials have not established a direct link between the recoveries and the intelligence warning, the developments have heightened security concerns.

In Punjab, a suspected IED was found inside an unattended bag near the Rayya police post in Amritsar.

Police cordoned off the area and called in a bomb disposal squad, which later confirmed the presence of an explosive device and safely neutralised it.

“A suspicious bag was noticed near the police chowk. The bomb disposal squad was immediately alerted and, after examination, confirmed it was an IED. It was then defused as per standard operating procedures," said Amritsar SSP Sohail Qasim Mir.

On the same day, another IED was detected in Safapora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

The device was spotted by the Army’s bomb detection squad along with Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel and was defused within hours, officials said.

Security agencies noted that this was the third IED recovery in North Kashmir within a week. Earlier, explosive devices were found on the Tangmarg road and in Baramulla district.

Lashkar Terror Plot Alert

The recoveries come amid intelligence inputs warning of a potential Lashkar-e-Taiba conspiracy aimed at religious and tourist locations in Delhi.

Sources said the outfit was allegedly attempting to orchestrate an attack to avenge the February 6 suicide bombing at a mosque in Islamabad, which killed more than 30 people.

The Islamic State, however, had claimed responsibility for that attack.

According to intelligence inputs, sensitive areas in Old Delhi, including locations around Chandni Chowk, could be among possible targets.

Investigators believe the plan may involve planting IEDs in or near high-footfall zones, including areas close to the Red Fort.

The Red Fort had witnessed a deadly car bomb explosion three months ago that left 12 people dead and more than 20 injured.

Investigators later said the attack was carried out by a white-collar terror module with links to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, a finding also referenced in a recent United Nations counter-terrorism report.
