Two Indian Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), BW Tyre and GREEN SANVI, have been cleared to depart the Persian Gulf, carrying more than 45,000 metric tonnes (MT) of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) each. Together, the vessels are transporting over 90,000 MT of critical cooking gas, a timely delivery for households across India.
The clearance comes amid heightened regional tensions and restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring a rare but vital breakthrough for safe maritime passage. Both ships were earlier positioned in the Persian Gulf, waiting for permission to transit the strategically important route.

The LPG on board is expected to reach Indian ports in the coming days, helping to ease domestic supply pressures and stabilise retail cooking gas availability for millions of households. Operated by leading Indian shipping entities, BW Tyre and GREEN SANVI are part of the country’s critical energy supply network.
Iran has played a supportive role by granting special clearance for the Indian carriers as part of its policy to allow passage for friendly nations, including India. The smooth departure of these vessels reinforces the strong bilateral energy partnership between India and Iran, even amid global tensions in the Gulf region.
