Two persons were killed and five others sustained injuries after a fire broke out at a restobar in Dattagalli on the Outer Ring Road in Mysuru on Monday.
The blaze erupted in the rooftop terrace garden of a two-storey building near Netaji Circle, which appeared to house a kitchen area as well as a dining area.
An official from the Fire and Emergency Services Department said the department received an alert around 3.15 p.m. and immediately dispatched fire tenders to the spot.
Several customers who were trapped in the rooftop dining area were rescued by the Fire and Emergency Services personnel using ladders.
“We rescued around 15 customers with the help of ladders and shifted them to hospital Later, during a search, we found two staff members dead,” the official said.
Most of the injured suffered minor burn injuries, according to officials.
The deceased have been identified as Sahin, 26, from northeast India, and Prakash, 24.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit. The officials said the presence of highly inflammable materials in the restobar set up in the rooftop terrace garden contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
The fire tenders from the Saraswathipuram and Hebbal fire stations brought the blaze under control and prevented it from spreading further.
Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Sundar Raj visited the spot and reviewed the situation.
Former Minister G.T. Deve Gowda, who represents the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency where the restobar is located, visited the spot. He said both the deceased were believed to be natives of other States and that officials had been instructed to inform their families.
Mr. Deve Gowda also said he would take up the issue of compensation for the next of kin of the deceased with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
