In a tragic incident, two final-year MBBS students of the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) drowned while bathing at the Deojharan waterfall in the Jujomura area of Odisha’s Sambalpur district.
The incident took place when a group of six students from VIMSAR had gone to the popular waterfall site for an outing. As per the local media reports, despite an official notice prohibiting visits to waterfalls during holidays, the students ventured to the top of the falls.
The deceased, identified as Monika Meena from Rajasthan and Sandeep Puri from Delhi, accidentally slipped into deep water while bathing. As per the local media, neither of them knew how to swim. Monika sustained a serious head injury while both were swept away by the strong current.
Local tourists and the remaining students immediately alerted the fire service personnel and police. Rescue teams arrived at the spot and recovered the bodies from the water.
Both were rushed to the Jujumura Group Health Centre, where doctors declared them dead.
Local police have launched an investigation into the incident.
