At least two people were killed and three others injured in a landslide on the trek route to the Kedarnath shrine on Wednesday, PTI reported.
At 11.20 in the morning, boulders descended the slope of the hillside near Junglechatti ghat and hit the pilgrims, palanquin and porter operators, throwing them into a gorge.
The police and SDRF personnel rushed to the site and swung into a search and rescue operation, Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Akshay Prahlad Konde told PTI.
The police, SDRF personnel and the locals struggled as they pulled out the deceased as well as the injured people out of the gorge using rope.
The identities of the deceased persons are yet to be ascertained.
Among the injured, a woman sustained minor bruises while the seriously injured men were referred to a health care centre in Gaurikund.
Konde said that the movement of pilgrims along the route continues under police protection.
