Two Punjab Police personnel were found dead with bullet injuries inside a police outpost near the Indo-Pak border on Sunday. The deceased, identified as Gurnam Singh and Ashok Kumar, were stationed at an outpost in Adhian, a village in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district.
Gurdaspur Station House Officer Banarsi Dass confirmed over the phone that Kumar was a home guard and Gurnam was an Assistant Sub Inspector. The bodies were discovered inside the room that serves as the outpost.
A senior official from Gurdaspur district stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the incident. The outposts, maintained by Punjab Police in coordination with the Border Security Force, serve as a second line of defence and are located about 2 km from the Indo-Pak border.
Gurdaspur SSP Aditya reported that they received information in the morning about the two personnel sustaining gunshot injuries. The police have cordoned off the crime scene, and both technical and forensic teams are present.
Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring called on both state and central governments to investigate the incident. In a post on X, Warring said, “It’s matter of grave concern that our 2 policemen were found shot dead near a checkpost in Adhian village, Gurdaspur district. Our sympathies are with the bereaved families, who have lost their loved ones."
“At the same time we urge both the state and the central governments to investigate the killings thoroughly, identify the culprits and punish them. We all have to face the situation together. We can’t afford to be partisan or divided on the matter of security of our people, state and the country," he added.
