A 30-year-old man died after the car he was travelling in caught fire following an explosion on a national highway in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district, around 70 kilometres from Bengaluru.
Investigators suspect the incident may be a case of self-harm, though the exact cause will be established only after forensic analysis, according to a report in The Times Of India.
The deceased, identified as Nagendra, is believed to have ignited the blaze using either a country-made explosive device or a Molotov cocktail near Kallambella in Sira taluk. A video capturing moments after the explosion has surfaced on X.

Police said that before the explosion, Nagendra allegedly attacked a woman, Roopa, striking her on the head with a knife while they were travelling in the vehicle. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape from the car. The cab driver also got out in an effort to help her. Shortly afterwards, an explosion was heard and the vehicle was engulfed in flames, the TOI report mentioned.
According to investigators, Nagendra had hired the cab from Siddapura near Jayanagar in Bengaluru. During the journey, he allegedly forced the woman into the vehicle. The incident unfolded near the Kallambella police station on Saturday afternoon.
Responding officers reached the spot and found the driver and another woman, identified as Ramya, standing outside the burning vehicle. After gathering preliminary information, police learnt that an explosion had occurred inside the car and that a body was trapped within. Further investigation was underway.
