Atletico Madrid and Club Brugge played out an exciting 3-3 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off round on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen made significant progress towards the last 16 by defeating Olympiacos 2-0 in Greece.
Club Brugge managed to come back from being 2-0 and 3-2 down to secure a draw, keeping the tie evenly poised for next week’s second leg.
Julian Alvarez gave Atletico an early lead from the penalty spot at the Jan Breydelstadion. Ademola Lookman doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time after Antoine Griezmann flicked on an Alvarez corner.
Raphael Onyedika of Nigeria pulled one back for the hosts shortly after the break, and Nicolo Tresoldi equalised on the hour mark.
Atletico seemed to have clinched the win when Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez scored an own goal, but Christos Tzolis levelled the score at 3-3 in the 89th minute.
“It was a rollercoaster, like it’s been all season. We have to concentrate more," Atletico captain Koke commented.
Atletico, currently fourth in La Liga and trailing the leaders, had recently hammered Barcelona 4-0 in their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg.
Leverkusen were out to avenge a 2-0 defeat by Olympiacos last month and succeeded, with Czech striker Patrik Schick scoring twice within four minutes around the hour mark in Piraeus.
Elsewhere, Kasper Hogh scored one goal and assisted in two others as Bodo/Glimt continued their impressive debut UCL campaign with a victory over Inter Milan. Kjetil Knutsen’s team extended their impressive run by defeating last season’s runners-up Inter, as Hog netted once and set the other two up in their 3-1 victory.
English forward Anthony Gordon spearheaded Newcastle United to a 6-1 triumph over Qarabag in Azerbaijan as Malick Thiaw and Jacob Murphy netted either side of a Gordon quadruple.
