UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has announced that she is leaving the social media platform X, saying it no longer serves as a healthy space for public discussion and democratic engagement. She also confirmed that the UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which she heads, will stop using the platform.

In a post announcing her decision, Nandy said she no longer wished to support a platform that, in her view, has moved away from its original purpose of encouraging free speech and open expression.

“I’ve decided to leave this platform and my department will too," she wrote. “A platform originally designed for free speech and expression now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate. It isn’t healthy for our democracy or our communities and I don’t want to support it."

Nandy encouraged people to continue following her on other social media platforms, adding, “You can follow me on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn @LisaNandyMP."

Her announcement comes amid continuing debate over the role of X in shaping public discourse, with critics raising concerns about the spread of misinformation, online abuse and changes to the platform’s moderation policies. Several public figures, organisations and institutions have reduced or ended their presence on X in recent years, citing similar concerns.

With Nandy’s departure, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport will also cease posting updates on X, marking another high-profile exit from the platform by a government department. The move underscores growing scrutiny over how social media platforms balance free expression with efforts to curb harmful content and misinformation.
