The United Kingdom has started using Starshield, the military-focused satellite communications system developed by SpaceX, Reuters reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The move makes Britain one of the first nations outside the United States to deploy the secure network designed specifically for government and defence operations.
Unlike Starlink, which provides broadband internet services to consumers and businesses, Starshield is built for military and intelligence missions and includes additional security and operational capabilities, the report mentioned.
How Starshield Differs From Starlink
Sources said the UK’s Ministry of Defence began shifting operational military communications to Starshield around the start of 2026. The service is understood to be significantly more expensive than the standard Starlink offering.
It said personnel continue to use Starlink for non-operational activities, including staying in contact with family members while deployed, and stressed that it “is not used for military operations". The Ministry also noted that the armed forces rely on multiple suppliers for communications and technology services.
SpaceX owner Elon Musk has repeatedly emphasised the distinction between Starlink and Starshield. While Starlink serves as the company’s commercial satellite internet network and primary revenue source, Starshield is tailored for government customers requiring enhanced security.
The company has previously stated that Starlink should not be integrated into weapons systems. Musk reiterated that position after reports emerged last month that SpaceX had sharply increased prices charged to the Pentagon for Starlink services used in operations involving kamikaze drones against Iran.
According to Reuters, the cost reportedly rose fivefold. Musk argued that the issue stemmed from the use of Starlink rather than Starshield, adding that the military-focused platform should have been used instead.
SpaceX is expected to go public on June 12 at a valuation exceeding $1.5 trillion.
