Russia is increasingly gaining battlefield momentum in the war against Ukraine, according to military analysts and Western officials, as Moscow intensifies pressure across multiple fronts while Kyiv struggles with manpower shortages and delayed military aid, as reported by CNN.

Recent months have seen Russian forces steadily advance in eastern Ukraine, capturing villages and strengthening positions around key contested regions including Donetsk and Kharkiv.

Military experts said Russia appears to have adapted its war strategy after earlier setbacks, relying on relentless drone attacks, heavy artillery use and gradual territorial gains rather than rapid breakthroughs.

Why Russia Is Gaining Ground

Analysts say several factors are contributing to Moscow’s current momentum:

  • Delays in Western military assistance to Ukraine
  • Ukrainian troop fatigue after more than two years of war
  • Russia’s larger defence industrial output
  • Increased use of glide bombs and long-range drones
  • Expanded recruitment and mobilisation by Moscow

Russian forces have also intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and logistics networks.

Officials say Moscow’s strategy appears focused on exhausting Ukraine over time rather than securing quick victories.

Ukraine Facing Growing Pressure

Ukrainian troops are reportedly facing mounting pressure along the front line, especially in the Donbas region.

Kyiv has acknowledged difficult battlefield conditions and renewed calls for faster delivery of Western air defence systems, artillery ammunition and fighter jets.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that delays in foreign aid directly affect Ukraine’s ability to hold territory.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to launch large-scale missile and drone barrages targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

Kremlin Betting On Long War

Western intelligence officials believe the Kremlin is increasingly confident that time may favour Moscow as political divisions grow within Western countries over continued support for Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown little indication of backing away from military objectives despite mounting casualties and sanctions.

Analysts say Moscow appears to believe it can outlast both Ukrainian resistance and Western political patience.

Uncertain Path Ahead

Despite Russia’s recent advances, experts caution that the battlefield situation remains fluid and costly for both sides.

Ukraine still retains significant defensive capabilities and continues receiving military support from NATO allies, though at a slower pace than Kyiv has requested.

The war, now deep into its third year, has become one of the most destructive conflicts in Europe since World War II, with no immediate diplomatic breakthrough in sight.
