Authorities have identified a 39-year-old Ukrainian woman as the main suspect in a bomb blastin Monaco that injured Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolaiev and two others earlier this week.
The suspect, identified as Anastasiia Berezovska in an Interpol Red Notice, is accused of disguising herself as a man to carry out the attack. Prosecutors said she had been living in Germany and has a distinctive tattoo, believed to be a snake, extending from her right shoulder to her elbow, CNN reported.
Suspect Fled Through France To Italy
Investigators said the suspect fled to neighbouring France after Monday’s explosion before driving into Italy in a German-registered rental car allegedly used for the operation.
Prosecutors believe the attack involved multiple people, citing the sophistication of the explosive device. Two men were detained in Monaco during the investigation but were later released because of insufficient evidence.
Blast Treated As ‘Attempted Assassination’
The explosion occurred at the entrance of a luxury apartment building where Yermolaiev lives. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the suspect visiting the location several times before the attack while dressed in the same masculine disguise. On another occasion, investigators believe she appeared without the disguise but followed an identical route, strengthening suspicions that she planted the explosive.
According to prosecutors, the bomb was detonated remotely after Yermolaiev, a woman and a child returned from dinner at a seaside restaurant. The suspect allegedly checked that the victims were close to the entrance before triggering the blast.
Authorities said one victim remains in critical condition, another suffered serious injuries and a third sustained minor wounds. Two bystanders were also hurt by shattered glass.
While the motive behind the attack remains unknown, Monaco prosecutor Stéphane Thibault has described the incident as an “attempted assassination." Investigators in Monaco, Germany and other European countries are continuing to examine the case. German police have searched the suspect’s rented apartment and vehicle and said any evidence recovered will be shared with Monegasque authorities.
