The Uttar Pradesh government has distributed laptops to 8,085 children who lost their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic under the Mukhyamantri Bal Seva Yojana (COVID), according to the Women Welfare Department.
The scheme, launched to support children orphaned or left destitute by the pandemic, combines financial assistance, educational support and digital access to help beneficiaries continue their studies.
Officials said the laptop distribution initiative is aimed at connecting children with digital education and enabling them to attend online classes, prepare for competitive examinations and develop technical skills.
Under the scheme, children aged between 11 and 18 years are also eligible for free education up to Class 12 in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and Atal Awasiya Vidyalayas.
In addition, eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance of Rs 14,000 per month to support their educational needs, including books, stationery and other study-related expenses.
The government said the scheme is designed to ensure that children affected by the pandemic do not have to discontinue their education due to financial constraints. Along with financial support, the programme seeks to provide access to quality education and digital learning resources.
Officials said efforts are also being made to expose beneficiaries to a more competitive learning environment through technology-enabled education. The initiative aims to improve confidence and equip children with skills required for higher education and future employment opportunities.
According to the Women Welfare Department, the scheme has evolved into a broader support mechanism focused on education, social security and long-term rehabilitation of children impacted by the pandemic.
The government has directed District Probation Officers across the state to ensure timely delivery of benefits under the scheme and conduct regular follow-ups with beneficiaries to monitor their overall development.
Officials said the objective is to help children become self-reliant and pursue their educational aspirations despite the challenges caused by the loss of parental support during the pandemic.
