3 wives, lakhs in dowry over 6 years; women seek police action as man plans 4th wedding

LUCKNOW: A case of alleged serial marriage fraud and dowry extortion has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh, with three women accusing a man of marrying them one after another over six years, extracting lakhs of rupees in cash and jewellery, and then abandoning them.

The accused is now allegedly preparing for a fourth marriage, prompting the three women to jointly seek police intervention. The man at the centre of the allegations has been identified as Sunil Kumar, a resident of Lalitpur district. His father is employed as a gangman in the Railways, while Sunil himself is reported to be unemployed or irregularly employed. Despite this, he allegedly concealed his marital status and entered into three marriages between 2019 and 2023.On Thursday, all three women appeared together at the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office in Jhansi, submitting written complaints detailing similar patterns of deception, dowry demands, domestic violence, and abandonment.First Marriage (2019)The first complainant stated that she married Sunil in 2019 according to Hindu rituals. Her family allegedly spent around Rs 8 lakh, including Rs 5 lakh in cash and jewellery. Soon after the marriage, Sunil allegedly began demanding additional dowry.

When these demands were not met, she was sent back to her parental home. She later received a divorce notice, and the matter is currently pending before a court.Second Marriage (2021)In 2021, Sunil allegedly entered into a second marriage, reportedly arranged by his father, without disclosing his existing marriage. The second wife said her family also spent approximately Rs 8 lakh on the wedding. Within months, she allegedly faced further dowry demands, including a gold chain and a Bullet motorcycle.

When the family refused, she claimed she was assaulted and thrown out of the house.Third Marriage (2023)Sunil’s third marriage took place in 2023. The woman alleged that despite her family giving nearly Rs 8 lakh and jewellery, he continued to harass her for more dowry. She further alleged that she was beaten and expelled from the house when she was three months pregnant. She later gave birth to a daughter at her maternal home. It was only afterward that she learned Sunil had already married twice before. After discovering the full extent of the alleged fraud, all three women jointly approached the SSP office, accusing Sunil of cheating, cruelty, and contracting multiple marriages by concealment.Police ActionConfirming police action in the matter, SSP Jhansi BBGTS Murthy said, “On the basis of the complaints submitted by the three women, an FIR has been registered. The allegations are being investigated, and appropriate legal action will be taken against the accused.”Police officials said further investigation is underway, including verification of allegations that Sunil Kumar is attempting to contract a fourth marriage despite the pending cases.
