Sources said India did not merely raise concerns diplomatically but backed its claims with extensive intelligence sharing through detailed dossiers

Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi
The sweeping US-Canada crackdown on the Lawrence Bishnoi-Goldy Brar criminal syndicate under Operation Hard Ball has validated India’s long-standing warnings about the transnational reach of the network and could help ease years of diplomatic friction over high-profile assassinations, top intelligence sources told News18 on Wednesday.
According to the sources, the coordinated operation, which resulted in the arrest of 24 key operatives across the United States and Canada and federal indictments against several alleged gang leaders, has significantly disrupted the syndicate’s overseas logistics, financial channels and operational capabilities.
“This is a major vindication of India’s consistent position that these were organised transnational criminal networks operating from foreign soil, not isolated domestic gangs," a top intelligence source said.
India Had Flagged The Threat For Years
Sources said New Delhi has, for more than a decade—and with greater intensity during the Narendra Modi government’s tenure—consistently warned partner countries that the Bishnoi-Brar syndicate had evolved into a sophisticated international criminal enterprise.
Indian agencies repeatedly maintained that members of the network had established safe havens in North America, from where they coordinated extortion, narcotics trafficking, targeted killings and other organised criminal activities while remaining beyond the reach of Indian law enforcement.
According to intelligence officials, Operation Hard Ball demonstrates that India’s assessment of the network’s scale, capability and international footprint was accurate.
Dossiers, Extradition Requests And Intelligence Sharing
Sources said India did not merely raise concerns diplomatically but backed its claims with extensive intelligence sharing.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), Punjab Police and other security agencies submitted detailed dossiers to counterparts in the United States, Canada and other Western countries documenting the activities of the Bishnoi-Brar syndicate.
These dossiers reportedly outlined the gang’s international extortion network targeting businessmen, singers and actors in Punjab, multi-continent narcotics trafficking operations, financial channels used to move illicit proceeds across jurisdictions, and the group’s ability to coordinate criminal operations from prisons using intermediaries and encrypted communication.
Officials said India also submitted 26 formal extradition requests, along with provisional arrest warrants and Interpol Red Corner Notices against several gangsters and separatists believed to be operating from abroad.
According to the sources, Indian agencies repeatedly warned that North America had become a major operational base for the syndicate, allowing it to evade Indian law while directing criminal activities back home.
Vindication Of India’s Position On Nijjar
Intelligence sources also said the latest legal action strengthens India’s long-held position regarding the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The diplomatic crisis between India and Canada began in September 2023 after then Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau alleged a potential link between Indian government agents and Nijjar’s murder.
India firmly rejected the allegation, insisting that Ottawa had not produced credible evidence while repeatedly urging Canadian authorities to act against extremist and organised criminal networks operating from Canadian soil.
According to the sources, the latest US federal indictment, which names the Lawrence Bishnoi-Goldy Brar syndicate as the organisation responsible for ordering and executing Nijjar’s assassination, frames the killing as the work of a transnational criminal network rather than attributing it to the Indian state.
“The latest action strongly vindicates India’s consistent denial of state-backed involvement," a senior intelligence official said.
Warnings About Safe Havens
Sources said one of New Delhi’s principal concerns throughout the diplomatic dispute was that several Western democracies had inadvertently become safe operating environments for anti-India extremists and organised crime syndicates.
Indian agencies consistently argued that these groups exploited legal protections, immigration systems and jurisdictional limitations to establish overseas bases from which they planned criminal activities targeting India.
Officials said India repeatedly cautioned its Western counterparts that the Bishnoi gang was using North America to run large-scale extortion rackets targeting Punjabi businessmen, artists and other high-profile individuals, while routing illicit proceeds through complex international financial channels.
Terror, Gangsters And Cross-Border Networks
Sources further said intelligence dossiers shared with foreign governments also contained extensive material on Nijjar’s alleged role as a leader of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force, including inputs relating to terror financing, recruitment and operational training infrastructure.
The dossiers, officials said, sought to establish links between organised crime syndicates and extremist networks that increasingly overlap in financing, logistics and operational support.
Could It Improve India’s Ties With Canada And The US?
According to intelligence officials, the coordinated action by American and Canadian law enforcement could mark an important turning point in security cooperation with India.
By formally prosecuting members of the Bishnoi-Brar syndicate on charges including murder, racketeering and narcotics trafficking, Western agencies have, the sources said, acknowledged the seriousness of threats that India has been flagging for years.
While diplomatic issues between New Delhi and Ottawa extend beyond a single criminal case, officials believe the recognition of organised crime networks operating across borders could create greater scope for cooperation on intelligence sharing, extradition and counter-terrorism in the future.
The operation, they said, represents not just a major law enforcement success but also a significant validation of India’s long-standing security assessment of one of the country’s most notorious transnational criminal syndicates.
