US intelligence agencies have warned the Trump administration that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could take steps that may undermine the newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war between the United States and Iran, Washington Post reported on Friday.
The assessment comes amid rising tensions over Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon, which have escalated since the signing of the MoU two days ago. The agreement was electronically signed on Wednesday by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The opening clause of the MoU calls for the “permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon". It also commits both sides to refrain from the threat or use of force and to uphold the “territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon".
Warning To Trump
According to the Washington Post report, US intelligence agencies circulated assessments suggesting that Netanyahu may act in ways that could disrupt Trump’s efforts to secure a lasting peace deal with Iran.
Current and former US officials told the paper that the intelligence community sees a risk that Israeli military actions in Lebanon could complicate or undermine the fragile agreement.
One US official familiar with the assessment was quoted as saying the intelligence reflects concern that Israel could continue or escalate operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, despite the ceasefire framework tied to the MoU. Another official said the analysis highlighted growing friction between Washington’s diplomatic objectives and Israel’s security priorities.
The report also noted that US officials have privately cautioned Israel against launching strikes that could destabilise the agreement, warning that continued escalation risks derailing broader diplomatic efforts with Tehran.
