A high-stakes diplomatic summit involving the United States, Iran, Qatar and Pakistan is set to begin at the Burgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne in Switzerland on Sunday, as negotiators seek to build on the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at ending months of conflict in West Asia.
According to exclusive details, top leaders and senior officials from the four countries will participate in the talks, which are expected to focus on a 60-day roadmap for resolving the broader Middle East crisis, implementation of the ceasefire framework and progress on a future nuclear agreement.
Qatari and Pakistani officials are acting as mediators in the negotiations, while Swiss diplomats are facilitating dialogue at the venue.
EMERGENCY SESSION ON ISRAEL-HEZBOLLAH CONFLICT
The first day of talks will include an emergency session dedicated to the conflict between Israel and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah group.
The inclusion of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in the negotiations marks a notable shift in US strategy, as neither Israel, Hezbollah, nor the Lebanese government is a party to the Switzerland talks.
News agency ANI reported that negotiators from both sides agreed to address the issue amid continuing hostilities in southern Lebanon.
The Iranian delegation is being led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as well as central bank and oil officials.
The US delegation is being headed by Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by senior representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.
Before departing for Switzerland, Vance said, “I’m looking forward to starting the technical talks with the Iranians, the Pakistanis, and the Qataris. We’re going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue and the Lebanon ceasefire issue. Those are the two big things that I think we’re going to be focused on."
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir also departed for Switzerland to participate in the technical-level discussions.
STRAIT OF HORMUZ DISPUTE OVERSHADOWS TALKS
The negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of escalating disagreement over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has claimed control over the strategic waterway in response to what it described as repeated ceasefire violations linked to Israeli military actions in Lebanon. The United States has rejected those claims.
US President Donald Trump warned that American tolls could be imposed in the shipping lane if a final agreement is not reached within 60 days.
Iran, meanwhile, linked developments in the strait to the implementation of ceasefire commitments.
US Central Command maintained that Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz and said commercial traffic continued through the route.
Iranian officials have signalled that progress toward a final agreement will depend on the implementation of commitments already made under the interim accord.
Ahead of the talks, Ghalibaf invoked the memory of victims of the Minab school incident.
In a post on X, he mentioned, “I consider the innocent children of Minab and all the martyrs of dear Iran to be watching over my every action and behaviour at every moment."
The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed the arrival of the Iranian delegation, stating on X that the delegation was travelling to Burgenstock as part of the implementation of the MoU signed between the United States and Iran.
The talks aim to flesh out the details of the preliminary accord signed earlier this week by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Negotiators have been given 60 days to work toward a broader nuclear agreement while sustaining a fragile ceasefire framework across the region.
