Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi opines that the war in Iran is the Trump administration’s “greatest miscalculation," highlighting the imprints it has left on the global economy and regional security.

In an opinion piece in The Economist, Oman’s top diplomat, who had mediated talks between Washington and Tehran before the war broke out, condemned what he described as an “unlawful war" in Iran and urged American allies to help end the conflict.

“So it was a shock but not a surprise when on February 28th—just a few hours after the latest and most substantive talks—Israel and America again launched an unlawful military strike against the peace that had briefly appeared really possible", Albusaidi writes.

Gulf states, including Oman, have for decades purchased American weapons and hosted US bases in the hopes of deterring a potential Iranian attack.

The relative peace and prosperity these nations had enjoyed are now under threat, the minister wrote, saying the US has “lost control of its own foreign policy."

“The question for friends of America is simple. What can we do to extricate the superpower from this unwanted entanglement?" he wrote.

Batting for an early end to hostilities, Albusaidi stressed the two parties involved in the war have “nothing to gain" from it.

“First of all, America’s friends have a responsibility to tell the truth. That begins with the fact that there are two parties to this war who have nothing to gain from it, and that the national interests of both Iran and America lie in the earliest possible end to hostilities."

The minister said it seems Israel had “persuaded" the US it would be an easy war to win – but that to achieve Israel’s goals, the US would have to put troops on the ground.

West Asia Conflict

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched joint strikes against Iran as Tehran’s nuclear programme faltered. In retaliation, Iran directed attacks on the military facilities linked to the US and Israel across the Gulf.

Since then, the conflict has only escalated in West Asia, disrupting global energy supply and fueling tensions in the region. On Thursday, the conflict between Iran, Israel and the US entered its 20th day on Thursday, with both sides intensifying military operations.
