The United States is considering easing restrictions on Iranian oil exports already at sea, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, signalling a potential shift in Washington’s approach as it seeks to stabilise global energy markets amid escalating conflict.
Speaking to Fox Business, Bessent said the US may allow more Iranian oil to reach global markets in a bid to ease supply pressures triggered by disruptions in key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that Washington could also undertake a unilateral release of oil from its strategic reserves to further calm markets if needed.
