Sources mentioned that military action alone may not be enough to immediately reopen the strait, with shipping operators still wary of the risks.

The US military is preparing new operational plans to target Iran’s capabilities in and around the Strait of Hormuz if the current ceasefire collapses, CNN reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the discussions. Follow Live Updates Here

According to CNN, the options under consideration include “dynamic targeting" of Iranian assets across key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, the southern Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The proposed strikes could focus on fast attack boats, minelaying vessels and other asymmetric systems that Iran has used to disrupt maritime traffic.

Focus Shifts To Strategic Waterways

The report said earlier US operations had largely focused on targets deeper inside Iran, but the new strategy would shift attention to coastal and naval capabilities that directly impact global shipping routes. Iran’s actions in the strait, a critical corridor for global oil and gas supplies, have already disrupted trade and rattled markets.

CNN reported that many of Iran’s coastal defence systems, including missile batteries and small attack vessels, remain operational, posing a continued challenge to US efforts to restore safe passage.

Shipping Risks Remain High

Sources cited by CNN said military action alone may not be enough to immediately reopen the strait, with shipping operators still wary of the risks. One source indicated that the decision to resume shipping would depend on how much risk the US is willing to absorb without fully neutralising Iran’s capabilities.

The report added that tankers remain reluctant to enter the waterway amid fears of further attacks.

Wider Options Under Review

Beyond naval targets, US planners are also considering strikes on dual-use infrastructure, including energy facilities, to increase pressure on Tehran, CNN reported. Such a move, however, could mark a significant escalation.

The report also said discussions have included the possibility of targeting key Iranian figures linked to military decision-making, though officials cautioned that these options remain under review.

US Keeps Military Pressure On

A Pentagon spokesperson told CNN that all options remain on the table, without commenting on specific plans. Meanwhile, US forces continue to maintain a strong presence in the region, with multiple naval deployments and a blockade of Iranian ports underway.

CNN reported that the US Navy has already redirected dozens of vessels and carried out boardings in recent weeks as part of its enforcement operations.

The developments come as Washington weighs its next steps, with President Donald Trump indicating that while diplomacy is preferred, military action could resume if negotiations fail.
