Antonee Robinson has long been regarded as one of the Premier League’s most reliable left-backs, but on Saturday he reminded everyone that he can be just as dangerous in front of goal.
The Fulham defender produced the moment of the match in the United States’ World Cup send-off friendly against Germany, smashing home a sensational volley to cancel out an early German lead and spark wild celebrations in Chicago.
Germany struck first after just two minutes when a defensive lapse allowed Joshua Kimmich to pick out Kai Havertz, who finished clinically to give the visitors an early advantage.
For a brief spell, it looked like Mauricio Pochettino’s side might be overwhelmed. Instead, Robinson delivered a goal that instantly entered the conversation among the best of his career.
The move began with Christian Pulisic carrying the ball out from deep before winning a corner. Germany initially dealt with the delivery, but only partially. As the ball looped into the air near the edge of the penalty area, Robinson arrived at exactly the right moment.
Without hesitation, he unleashed a ferocious first-time volley that flew beyond goalkeeper Oliver Baumann and into the net.
The strike was spectacular. The celebration that followed was nearly as memorable.
Robinson sprinted away before launching into a backflip, releasing months of frustration, pain and uncertainty.
The goal carried extra significance given the difficult road he has travelled over the past year. Robinson spent much of the 2025-26 season battling a troublesome knee injury, and his recovery was far from straightforward.
After undergoing surgery, the rehabilitation process proved slower than expected. Speaking earlier this year, Robinson admitted there were moments when he was not fully ready despite returning to training and match action.
There were genuine fears that the injury could jeopardise his path to the 2026 World Cup. Instead, just six days before the tournament begins, Robinson delivered a timely reminder of his quality.
