The rhyme and rhythm of vanchipattu (traditional boat songs) reverberated across the banks of the Pampa on Tuesday as the majestic palliyodams (snakeboats) sliced through the river during the annual Uthratathi boat race.
This year’s grand regatta featured 50 snakeboats competing in two batches. The spectacle began with a ceremonial procession of 51 decorated palliyodams, which drew thunderous applause from the crowds.
Earlier in the day, Health Minister Veena George inaugurated the event, while actor Jayasurya released the official souvenir.
Speaking at the function, Ms. George announced that a permanent pavilion would be constructed at the Aranmula Sathrakkadavu to host the Uthratathi regatta. Funds had already been sanctioned, the tender process was under way, and the structure was expected to be ready before next year’s event.
The celebrations were presided over by K.V. Sambadevan, president of the Palliyoda Seva Sangham. Pramod Narayan, MLA, District Police Chief R. Anand, and District Collector S. Prem Krishnan were present.
Despite the scorching midday heat, enthusiastic crowds thronged the banks of the river, eager to witness the spectacle of the decorated snakeboats and the synchronised might of their oarsmen.
More than just a competition, the regatta blends festivity and faith, commemorating the anniversary of the idol installation at the Sree Parthasarathy temple. Each palliyodam participating in the race is manned by oarsmen carefully chosen from the respective village, all clad in traditional white dhoti and melmundu.
Winners
Melukara and Kottathoor Palliyodams clinched the prestigious Mannam Trophy in the A and B batches, respectively. Ayiroor secured the runner-up position in the A batch, while Kodiyattukara finished second in the B batch.
