To address the larger issue of “depoliticisation” among the youth in Tamil Nadu, the  Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is organising a training programme on “contemporary political” issues.

The first session in the series was addressed on Monday by party president  Thol.  Thirumavalavan and general secretary D. Ravikumar, both Members of Parliament.

Party sources said around 100 office-bearers from the Villupuram and Vikravandi Assembly constituencies took part in the session in person, and district office-bearers from across Tamil Nadu participated online.

While Mr. Ravikumar dealt in his speech with various aspects of ‘One Nation One Election’, Mr. Thirumavalavan spoke in detail about the delimitation Bill and how the exercise could affect the Southern States in particular.

Burning political issues

Mr. Ravikumar said the programme was named ‘Present Times’. “This programme is meant mainly for the party workers and also office-bearers who, we feel, need to be educated on various issues. The idea is to address the large-scale depoliticisation of youth, who are consuming a lot of content about politics, but without the right political perspective. There is a need to sensitise people to the burning political issues of the day.”

He said the party felt the urgent need to inform and educate the people on the Bills proposed, the schemes of the Central and State governments, and inter-State issues such as the dam proposed across the Cauvery at Mekedatu.

Asked why the VCK was yet to “formalise” the alliance with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri  Kazhagam (TVK) despite being a constituent of the coalition government, Mr. Ravikumar said it would be appropriate to pose the question to the TVK.
