Illegal use, safety violations, no emergency exit: Lucknow building a death trap
A massive fire in a commercial complex in Lucknow's Aliganj area has claimed fifteen lives and left nine others injured. The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a Special Investigation Team and forensic probe into the incident. Investigations reveal severe safety lapses, including the illegal conversion of a residential property for commercial use without necessary infrastructure upgrades. The building housed a coaching centre and a pet shop, where several animals also perished. A major factor contributing to the high death toll was the main gate's biometric auto-lock system, which failed during the blaze, trapping occupants inside. Furthermore, the building lacked adequate staircase space and proper emergency exits. In response to the tragedy, authorities have arrested four individuals, including the building owner, and suspended four government officials for negligence. The injured are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, with some suffering severe injuries after jumping from the building to escape the flames.
