The United States has established a monitoring mechanism led by its military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) to track fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon in “real time".

According to a US official, the mechanism was set up as part of Washington’s efforts to bring “peace and security" and support diplomatic engagement between the two sides, Anadolu Agency reported on Monday.

“Our shared goal is to end the cycle of violence for good," the official was quoted as saying. “We are enabling Israel and Lebanon to negotiate as two sovereign states and to find a way to have peace and security. The talks will continue to advance a comprehensive peace and security agreement between the two countries."

The CENTCOM-led mechanism was established following phone calls by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The discussions reportedly focused on “solidifying the ceasefire and future talks," the official added.
