A labourer died in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday while working to repair a water pipeline beneath a road. The tragic incident, captured on CCTV, has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage against the authorities.

Mahendra Singh was carrying out repairs when debris fell on him, trapping him under the rubble. CCTV footage showed his coworkers frantically trying to pull him out while shouting at the excavator truck operator to assist them.

According to officials, Singh succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital.

Family members of the deceased have expressed frustration, accusing the authorities of subjecting workers to harsh conditions without addressing their concerns. They claimed that workers are made to labour around the clock with no one listening to their grievances.

The accident comes at a time when many roads under the Aligarh Municipal Corporation's CM GRID initiative remain damaged or incomplete. Reports indicate that several stretches lack connecting slopes, further exacerbating safety hazards and highlighting ongoing concerns about the quality of infrastructure.

For the uninitiated, the CM GRID Scheme in Aligarh aims to transform key roads into modern, smart streets for better traffic flow, safety, and urban aesthetics. The initiative focusses on upgrading wide, high-traffic roads to enhance infrastructure across the city.

Meanwhile, the incident has raised concerns about both worker safety and the quality of infrastructure.
