A protest in Washington DC caught eyeballs on the eve of one of the city’s most prominent media events as demonstrators projected images and documents related to US President Donald Trump and late financier Jeffrey Epstein onto a major hotel building.

The projections were displayed on the facade of the Washington Hilton, which is set to host the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The visuals reportedly included photographs and documents linked to Epstein, along with audio said to feature readings of his emails. A crowd gathered across the street, watching as the display unfolded.

The protest took place on April 24, just a day before the widely attended dinner, which brings together journalists, political leaders, and public figures associated with coverage of the US presidency.

This year’s event carries added significance, as Trump is expected to attend, marking his first appearance at the dinner while in office. His participation has generated both interest and criticism, given his long-standing and often tense relationship with the media.

“The Press was extraordinarily bad to me," Trump said recently in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Organised by the White House Correspondents’ Association, the dinner has traditionally included the sitting president as part of its focus on press freedom. However, Trump did not attend the event during his first term and also skipped it in 2025.

The decision to invite him this year has triggered debate within media circles. Hundreds of journalists have signed an open letter urging attendees to question the president directly about his administration’s approach to press freedom and access.

Trump’s relationship with the media has remained deeply strained. He has repeatedly dismissed critical coverage as “fake news", filed lawsuits against news organisations, and publicly criticised individual journalists. His administration has also taken steps to limit press access, including barring the Associated Press from the White House press pool and tightening restrictions on reporters at the Pentagon.

At the same time, Trump has maintained a direct line of communication with journalists, often taking calls on his personal phone and engaging with reporters during press interactions.

Although this will be his first appearance at the dinner as president, Trump had previously attended the event as a guest in 2011.
