A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader accused of corruption in the 100-day employment scheme faced public humiliation after angry villagers allegedly paraded him through an area in West Bengal's Shyampur with his head tonsured, a garland of shoes around his neck, and a rope tied around his waist.

The leader at the centre of the controversy was identified as Sannyasi Manna. Police later rescued him from the crowd and took him into custody.

According to local sources, residents had long accused Manna of embezzling funds and engaging in corruption related to the 100-day work scheme (MGNREGA). Anger had reportedly been building among villagers over the alleged misuse of public money meant for beneficiaries of the employment programme.

A large number of villagers allegedly gathered and surrounded Manna before launching a protest against him. As the demonstration intensified, the crowd allegedly shaved his head, placed a garland of shoes around his neck and tied a rope around his waist before parading him through the locality.

The protesters claimed that people who misappropriate money meant for poor citizens deserve such punishment.

After receiving information about the incident, a large team from Shyampur Police Station reached the spot. Police personnel intervened, brought the situation under control and rescued Manna from the crowd before taking him to the police station.
