Amid the ongoing campaign ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu polls, the campaign trail of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay witnessed high-voltage drama on Monday, as he abruptly cancelled part of his scheduled outreach in Chennai. The actor-turned-politician cited serious lapses in security arrangements for both the public and his convoy.
The development came after Vijay filed his nomination to contest from the Perambur constituency around 12:15 pm and began his campaign shortly. At around 1:05 pm, much earlier than the scheduled 2 pm start.
However, the campaigning got disrupted due to delays, and it took nearly two hours for the TVK chief to cover just about 5 km from Perambur to Kolathur. Despite the delay, a massive crowd gathered in Kolathur to witness him.
Following this, the TVK alleged that inadequate police deployment led to traffic congestion. The party further stated that poor crowd management left the convoy stranded for a long duration.
The party has accused officials of deliberately creating hurdles during the election campaign at the instructions of the ruling DMK.
Meanwhile, TVK joint secretary Nirmal Kumar wrote to the Election Commission of India and urged immediate intervention and action against the Chennai Police Commissioner and other officials over alleged security lapses.
The cancellation of the event came in view of the recent Karur stampede incident. Citing security concerns, the TVK leadership decided to cancel the final leg of Vijay’s campaign in Villivakkam.
The party’s local representative later apologised to supporters who had gathered there in large numbers.
Meanwhile, the DMK has strongly denied all allegations and stated that the poll body holds complete authority during the election period.
Responding to the allegations levelled by TVK, claiming that the Chief Minister MK Stalin is intentionally creating a situation similar to the Karur tragedy by deliberately delaying Vijay’s movement, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said that the accusations are baseless.
