Tamil Nadu results highlight a series of heartbreaking "what-ifs" for the TVK, as it could have comfortably crossed the majority mark but failed.

The TVK's tally ended up at 108, falling 10 seats short of the majority mark.
2026 Tamil Nadu election: The 2026 Tamil Nadu election results have positioned Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on the threshold of history, marking a “so close, yet so far" debut that has stunned political veterans.
While the party’s performance shattered the decades-old Dravidian duopoly, a forensic look at the data reveals a series of agonising “what-ifs" that cost Vijay an absolute majority. Had the TVK flipped just a handful of constituencies lost by razor-thin margins, the party would have comfortably bypassed the need for coalition partners to reach the 118-seat magic number.

The TVK’s tally ended up at 108, falling 10 seats short of the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly. This means that Vijay would need to reach out to other parties for support.
Here are 10 seats TVK lost by a small margin:
1. Tirukkoyilur: The 285-Vote Heartbreak
The narrowest defeat of the entire election occurred in Tirukkoyilur, where TVK’s Vijay R. Baranibalaaji was edged out by the AIADMK’s S. Palanisamy by a staggering margin of just 285 votes.
2. Palani
In Palani, Dr M. Praveen Kumar put up a formidable fight but ultimately lost against AIADMK’s K. Ravimanoharan by only 693 votes, proving that the TVK had successfully breached traditional strongholds even if they couldn’t quite secure the seat.
3. Udhagamandalam
The Nilgiris saw a tense three-way battle where TVK candidate R. Ibrahim missed victory by a mere 976 votes, losing to BJP’s M Bhojarajan in a contest where every postal ballot shifted the final momentum.
4. Papanasam
In Papanasam, TVK candidate Azarudeen Uduman Ali pushed IUML’s AM Shahjahan to the limit, eventually falling short by a margin of 1,065 votes in a seat that many expected to be a cakewalk for the incumbent alliance.
5. Dindigul
Dindigul witnessed a high-decibel clash where TVK’s Nazeer Raja G. gave a serious scare to DMK heavyweight Senthilkumar I P, losing by just 1,131 votes as the final rounds of counting favoured the veteran leader.
6. Killiyoor
In the coastal constituency of Killiyoor, TVK’s S. Sabin demonstrated significant local support by coming within 1,311 votes of unseating Congress leader S. Rajesh Kumar.
7. Thirumayam
The TVK almost staged a major upset in Thirumayam, where C. Chinthamani trailed the seasoned DMK leader G. Regupathy by only 1,492 votes, marking one of the most competitive rural contests of the year.
8. Pudukkottai
In Pudukkottai, the margin remained thin throughout the day, ending with DMK’s V Muthuraja securing a win over TVK’s K M Shariff by just 1,867 votes after multiple rounds of verification.
9. Yercaud
The TVK’s outreach in the Yercaud hills nearly paid dividends as J. Lakshmi Janarthanan lost by just 2,189 votes against AIADMK’s P. Usharani, showcasing the party’s unexpected depth in tribal constituencies.
10. Tiruttani
In Tiruttani, TVK candidate M Sathya Kumar faced a tough challenge against the AIADMK’s G. Hari, ultimately finishing 5,793 votes behind, rounding out the ten critical seats where a slight swing could have changed the fate of the state government.
