The chances of TVK going with either DMK or BJP are unlikely as Vijay has labelled them "political" and "ideological" enemies, respectively.

Tamil Nadu Government Formation Updates: Thalapathy Vijay is set to stake a claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu, even as his party falls short of a clear majority in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief on Tuesday convened a meeting of the party’s executive committee and newly elected MLAs. During the meeting, all TVK legislators submitted letters of support, unanimously electing Vijay as their leader and chief ministerial candidate.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is expected to invite the party to stake its claim and may subsequently ask it to prove its majority on the floor of the House. The TVK is also exploring the option of securing support from other parties to cross the majority mark before formally staking its claim with the Governor.

However, the chances of TVK going with either DMK or BJP are unlikely as Vijay has labelled them “political" and “ideological" enemies, respectively.

What Is INDIA Bloc Thinking?

Tamil Nadu Congress President K and Congress leader Girish Chodankar met the elected MLAs at the party office in Chennai.

When asked about a possible alliance with the TVK, Selvaperunthagai said that the high command will decide whether to ally with Vijay or not. “They won 108 seats, they don’t have a majority…I don’t know how they will manage it…The High Command will decide on whether to ally with the TVK or not," he said.

Congress, which won 18 seats in the 2021 election, could only secure victories in five constituencies.

Top high brass, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal, will meet in New Delhi to assess the situation in Tamil Nadu and take a call.

Another DMK ally Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) confirmed that it has not received any invite from Vijay’s party so far to join hands. DMDK chief Premalatha Vijayakanth said her party will continue in the Secular Progressive Alliance led by DMK.

Premalatha has Vijay for his election victory, saying he is “like a child of our household."

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which has two MLAs, said it has not decided to back Vijay yet. “We have not yet decided. The leaders of VCK, CPI and CPM are going to meet MK Stalin at around 11 AM, and we will inform you", said VCK Chief, Thol. Thirumavalavan.

How AIADMK Reacted?

According to sources, AIADMK will deliberate on supporting the TVK government since the mandate in Tamil Nadu is “anti-DMK". However, AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami is yet to decide on extending support. The BJP has not been roped into this decision-making.

Palaniswami has called for a meeting of the winning candidates at the party office on Wednesday.
