The swearing-in ceremony of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is uncertain, with sources indicating that Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is not yet convinced that TVK has the required numbers to form the government.

As per sources in Lok Bhavan, the Governor has sought clarity on the strength of the actor-turned-politician’s party, which has staked a claim to form the government after emerging as the single largest party in the recently held assembly polls.

TVK currently has 108 MLAs, along with the support of five legislators from the Congress. With this, the number rose to 112, excluding one of the two seats that Vijay won. However, this still falls short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.

There is still no clarity on further backing, with parties like the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which has two MLAs, yet to take a final call.

Sources said the Governor has asked for 118 MLAs support and has made it clear that the swearing-in can only take place once Vijay proves the required majority.

Earlier today, the TVK chief, along with KA Sengottaiyan, Bussy N Anand, Arunraj, CTR Nirmal Kumar, Aadhav Arjun and Venkatraman, met the Governor and staked a claim to form the government.

During the meeting, Vijay submitted a detailed letter consisting of the signatures of 108 MLAs who backed him as their choice as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, sources told CNN-News18.

The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) suffered a major setback, winning only 59 seats, with the remaining constituencies going to smaller parties including Congress and Left groups.
