Tamil Nadu Elections: Actor-turned-politician Vijay is facing the biggest political test of his career as he contests elections for the first time from two Tamil Nadu constituencies- Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East in central Tamil Nadu. With both seats recording strong polling percentages till 5 pm, attention has turned to whether the superstar can transform fan following into actual votes.

Perambur recorded an impressive 86% turnout by 5 pm while Tiruchirappalli East touched 79%. Both figures are notably high and suggest intense voter interest in constituencies where Vijay has made his electoral debut.

Can Vijay’s Massive Popularity Convert Into A Win?

For years, Vijay has enjoyed one of the largest fan bases in Tamil Nadu, especially among youth and lower middle-class urban voters. His film releases often drew political-style celebrations and that personal popularity helped fuel speculation about an eventual political plunge. But elections are different from cinema openings. They depend on booth management, cadre strength, voter mobilisation and local caste-community arithmetic. That is where established players like the DMK and AIADMK still hold an edge.

In Perambur, a working-class and lower middle-class Chennai seat, Vijay’s celebrity pull could resonate strongly among younger and floating voters. The constituency was won by DMK’s R D Sekar in 2021, while Chennai district overall had relatively lower turnout compared with many other Tamil Nadu regions. A jump to 86% could indicate a new voter wave entering the race.

In Tiruchirappalli East, the contest is more layered. The seat has urban voters, traders, minorities and committed party loyalists. DMK’s Inigo S Irudayaraj won the constituency in 2021. If Vijay performs strongly here, it would suggest his appeal is broader than just metro fan support.

First Time Big Win Possible For Vijay?

First-time candidates, even famous ones, often struggle to convert visibility into margins. Yet Vijay is not entering politics as an unknown face. He is arriving with a ready-made statewide identity, an organised fan network and months of campaign momentum.

That gives him an advantage many debutants do not have.

If high turnout in Perambur reflects silent support from first-time voters, women and younger residents, Vijay could be positioned for a surprise margin. In Tiruchirappalli East, even a close contest would be seen as a major breakthrough for a newcomer taking on entrenched parties.

Winning one seat convincingly and performing strongly in the other would immediately place Vijay among Tamil Nadu’s principal opposition forces.

Could Vijay Be Headed For A Record Win?

Perambur may offer the strongest clues. An 86% turnout in an urban Chennai constituency is unusually high and could signal extraordinary voter mobilisation. In multi-cornered contests, such turnout sometimes benefits a candidate who energises otherwise inactive voters. Vijay’s outsider image and star status may do exactly that.

Tiruchirappalli East’s 79% turnout also points to strong participation, but its more traditional political structure may make a record win harder there than in Perambur.

For now, turnout numbers alone cannot predict the result. But they do show one clear reality: Vijay’s first election has generated genuine momentum. If that momentum converts into votes, Tamil Nadu politics could be witnessing the arrival of a formidable new force.
