Doctors of the BLDE Association B.M. Patil Super-speciality Hospital and Research Centre have successfully carried out kidney transplantation on a patient in Vijayapura. This is the first such operation in the hospital, the doctors said.

The other kidney harvested from a 30-year-old brain-dead patient was transported to Kalaburagi.

Balaram Krishna Bagalkot was seriously injured in an accident on February 9. On Friday, he was declared brain dead.

Following counselling by the hospital’s officers, family members of the young man agreed to donate his two kidneys and eyes.

Doctors harvested these organs. The body was handed over to the patient’s relatives, sisters Shruti Halladamani, Roopa, brother Parashurama Krishna Bagalkot and uncles Kashinath and Shravan Kumar.

One of the kidneys was used to treat a patient under the State government’s Jeevan Sarthakate Scheme.

The other kidney was taken to Kalaburagi under zero traffic system.

Two corneas will be used to treat those suffering from loss of vision, the doctors said.

The transplant surgery team consisted of S.B. Patil, Dilip Javali, Vinaya Kundargi, Santosh Patil, Santosh Alalmath, Manju Prasad, Organ Donation Consultant Shantesh Salagare, nursing staff and others.

Meanwhile, Medical Director of BLDE Association Super-speciality Hospital Vijayakumar Kalyanapugol has urged more people to donate organs.

As of now, 5,905 patients are waiting for organ transplants. They include 579 who are waiting for kidney transplant, 50 for liver treatment, several hundreds of patients for heart transplant, 43 patients for lung transplant and 50 for other combined transplants. They will get help if more people volunteer to donate organs, he said.

Principal Tejashwini Vallabh thanked the donor and his family. He has achieved immortality by helping four persons lead better lives. The Bagalkot family has set an example for others, Dr. Vallabh said.

Administrator of the Emergency Department Sharanappa Katti, doctors Udayakumar Nuchchi, Santosh Galagali, Umesh, Sandeep Patil, Basavaraj Sajjan and others were present.

Minister and chairman of BLDE Association M.B. Patil, BLDE Association Deemed University Chancellor B.M. Patil, Pro-Chancellor Y.M. Jayaraj, Vice-Chancellor Arun Inamdar and Registrar R.V. Kulkarni has congratulated the teams and thanked the donor family, said a release.
