Vijayawada: In a major push to ease traffic congestion and adopt smart mobility solutions, city traffic police are preparing to deploy the Actionable Intelligence for Sustainable Traffic Management (ASTraM) app to operate traffic signals.

The initiative aims to improve traffic flow using technology-driven solutions.Currently, the ASTraM app analyses congestion using three data sources, including satellite inputs and Google platforms. Officials are now exploring its integration with an Adaptive Traffic Signal Management System (ATSM) to regulate signals dynamically. As part of the plan, trials were conducted at Mahanadu Junction on NH-16 for several days.

Traffic was regulated using the ASTraM-based ATSM system, which reportedly achieved nearly 80% efficiency during testing. The city has around 53 traffic junctions. Installing advanced cameras, controllers and network infrastructure at each point would cost an estimated ₹3–4 crore. To reduce costs, authorities are considering using satellite and Google Maps data instead of camera-based systems.Once implemented, the system will adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic density.

“Green and red lights, along with timer operations, would function according to traffic conditions. The system will be centrally monitored and operated through the Command Control Center. We believe the technology could significantly reduce congestion and improve traffic management efficiency across the city,” a police official attached to the city command control centre said.
