If you’ve watched Netflix’s popular series House of Cards, one of its most striking moments is when US President Frank Underwood orders a war to deflect from mounting political troubles — a classic power move when a leader is under pressure.
Critics of US President Donald Trump now draw parallels. They claim that Trump launched a war against Iran while under scrutiny over the Epstein files. Against that backdrop, a gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, which Trump attended. While the President was safe, critics have amplified claims that the incident was “staged" to bolster support for a proposed ballroom near the White House, currently facing legal pushback.
After the shooting incident, Trump called for building a ballroom to be built on the grounds of the White House. “What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
How Netizens Reacted?
Hashtag #Staged began trending on social media after the incident, with users sharing reactions and pushing conspiracy theories.
One user, “Scarry Larry", alleged that during the supposed “assassination attempt", Pete Hegseth was seen moving from table to table looking for unfinished drinks.
Another X user, “YourAnonCentral", pointed to Donald Trump’s reaction to the gunshots and Melania Trump’s visible fear, claiming the entire episode was staged “for a ballroom".
More On Conspiracy Theories
The White House Correspondents’ Association invited Donald Trump to its annual gala this year despite his repeated attacks on the media, marking his first appearance at the dinner as president after years of boycotting the event. The gathering typically brings together journalists and Washington’s political elite to raise funds for scholarships and awards.
The shooting incident at the event has since fuelled conspiracy theories online. Some users have drawn parallels with an earlier episode months before the US election, when a gunman opened fire at a rally in Pennsylvania, leaving Trump with a minor ear injury and killing an audience member. That attack, too, had triggered fringe claims that it was staged to generate public sympathy — a narrative now being echoed again by sections on social media following the latest incident.
White House Ballroom Project
Donald Trump has proposed building a 90,000 sq ft ballroom near the White House, estimated to cost around $400 million. The facility is envisioned as a high-security venue to host state functions and large gatherings within the White House complex. However, the project has faced significant legal and political pushback. Preservation groups, led by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, have challenged the construction in court, arguing that the administration bypassed required federal approvals, environmental reviews, and congressional oversight.
A federal judge had even halted construction earlier, questioning the legality of demolishing parts of the East Wing and the funding structure. Although an appeals court later allowed work to continue temporarily, the case remains under litigation, with a final outcome still pending.
