World Champions D Gukesh went down to Greek GM Nikolas Theodorou in the sixth round of the FIDE Grand Swiss on Tuesday as Theodorou took his tally to four points out of a possible six up until now.

The 25-year-old Greek outplayed Gukesh in the Rook ending to secure all points on offer as the Indian, who was frustrated with himself, made a quick passage out of the playing hall after opting to resign.

Gukesh aimed for victory at all costs, but this ambition led to a disaster. The world champion could have achieved a draw in the rook and pawns endgame, yet a rare miscalculation resulted in failure.

Currently at fifty percent, Gukesh needs to win at least four of the remaining five games to stay in contention.
