In the era of social media, even the smallest of moments can be big enough to chase fame. From falling on the road to clearing board exams, people find any and every reason to make a video and share it online.

However, sometimes the search for clout can lead to the loss of life.In a video going viral online, a man named Salim from Nehtaur, Uttar Pradesh, decided to make a daring video for social media. The 42-year-old repeatedly put a dead venomous snake in his mouth, pulling it in and out multiple times while wrapping its tail around his head. All the while he kept on smiling, posing and flexing the alleged achievement of killing a snake.

As per media reports, the man's stunt left an effect on him. Even dead snakes can be fatal and soon the venom from the snake's glands entered his body through his teeth and gums leaving him helpless.However, rather than taking him quickly to the hospital his family took him to a spiritual healer to brush away his ailments. It was only when his condition worsened that he was taken to a local clinic where the doctors gave him basic treatment and referred him to a hospital.

Dr Shubham Kumar who works at CHC Nehtaur, revealed that Salim was too late in arriving at the hospital and was thus in a critical condition. After giving him primary care, he was referred to a higher centre for better treatment where he is currently being monitored.As the video gained traction, many condemned the act of doing things just for social media."How stupid. Why does he think he's cool? It's a dead snake.," wrote a user. "A few seconds of viral fame is NEVER worth risking your life. Social media trends come and go, but your life and health don’t," wrote a user," added another.A snake's nervous system and muscles can function for hours after death. If one stimulates the mouth, the jaws can reflexively clamp down and inject a full dose of venom. Moreover, if the fangs penetrate the skin, a venomous snake can cause excruciating pain, swelling, tissue death and bruising. As the man took out the snake's fangs and put his head in his mouth, the result is likely due to the same.Snake sightings in India increase significantly during the monsoon. While it is always better to call a certified wildlife rescuer for help, in cases where you are forced to deal with it yourself, it is vital to be careful.
