FIFA's 2026 World Cup will have "hydration breaks" for player welfare, pausing each half around the 22-minute mark. Only FIFA sponsors can advertise during these breaks.

FIFA’s new “hydration breaks" at the 2026 World Cup won’t just give players a breather — they’ll give broadcasters a chance to cash in, too.

According to a report from The Athletic, TV networks will be allowed to run commercials during the three-minute breaks that will split each half of every match.

The global governing body first announced the change in December, pitching the breaks as a player-welfare measure. Every game will pause around the 22-minute mark of each half, regardless of weather conditions, to allow players time to rehydrate.

Behind the scenes, however, FIFA has also mapped out how those pauses can work for broadcasters.

As per The Athletic’s report, Networks can cut away from the match feed entirely, just like halftime or timeouts in sports like basketball or American football, and run ads.

There are a few rules, though.

Broadcasters cannot start commercials within 20 seconds of the referee’s whistle and must return to the live feed at least 30 seconds before play resumes. That effectively leaves a two-minute-plus window for ads.

Networks also have other options. They can keep the match on screen, switch to studio analysis, or show split-screen ads alongside the live feed.

But if they keep the match visible, there’s a catch: only FIFA sponsors can advertise in that space.

That protects major partners like Coca-Cola, who pay huge sums for exclusivity.

If broadcasters go to full-screen ads, however, they’re free to sell those spots to any advertiser.

The breaks themselves are part of FIFA’s attempt to manage extreme summer conditions at the expanded 2026 tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

With matches scheduled across 13 different kickoff times and concerns over heat, wildfires and other weather risks, FIFA says the pauses are meant to keep conditions consistent for every team.

But for broadcasters and sponsors, they’re also shaping up to be the World Cup’s newest commercial timeout.
