As US and Iranian negotiators meet in Switzerland to advance a preliminary agreement aimed at halting the war in West Asia, an overwhelming number of Israelis believe that Tehran emerged stronger from the war and its subsequent deal with Washington, according to a poll released on Sunday.

The poll of 3,644 respondents, conducted by the University of Jerusalem in collaboration with the Agam Institute between June 17 and 20, showed that 92.1% of Israelis believed that Iran had won or gained more from the conflict.

It also found that 93.1% of voters who support the right-wing bloc, the electoral base of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, believe that Iran had won, while 82.9% of the total respondents believed that Israel’s long-term security had been weakened.

The Israeli opposition to the US-Iran deal was reflected in the poll, with 63.2% of respondents opposing it compared to just 12.1% expressing support. It also reflected the political pressure on Netanyahu, with 56.4% calling his management of the campaign “failed" or “poor".

Netanyahu’s support for another term as PM also plummeted from 40.5% in early March to 29.4% in June. Nearly three-fourths of the respondents did not believe his assertions about the success of the campaign against Hezbollah, with 48.2% backing renewed military action in Lebanon even if it risked confrontation with the US.

Israeli citizens had earlier expressed frustration with the US-Iran deal, saying “Iranians got what they want" after the agreement called for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

“These 12 hours of missiles are a waste of time for us. We didn’t get anything out of that. The Iranians got what they want. So basically Israel is now locked in terms of Lebanon and locked in terms of Iran. So, we basically lost," said Gal Nakash, an entrepreneur

Israeli Opposition To US-Iran Deal

Negotiations to turn the temporary Iran-US agreement into a more permanent deal were to take place in Switzerland on Sunday, despite the conflict in Lebanon threatening negotiations. US Vice President JD Vance said Washington hoped to make progress on two major issues: Iran’s nuclear programme and the ceasefire in Lebanon.

Israeli leaders have publicly opposed the preliminary agreement between the US and Iran that calls for an end to hostilities in Lebanon, saying it was struck without Israel’s consultation and ignored the long-term security interests of the country. Iran has asserted that a final deal to end the war was not possible without Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz on Sunday said soldiers in southern Lebanon have “no restrictions" in eliminating threats to the forces, and that Israeli troops would continue to remain in the so-called “security zone."

Continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon have prompted Iran to shut the strategically important Strait of Hormuz again for commercial shipping, testing the fragile regional truce. However, there had been no reports of Israeli strikes or continued fighting in Lebanon since Saturday.
