Chinese state media has launched a sharp propaganda broadside against the United States, mocking Washington’s claims of progress in the Iran war and portraying the conflict as both destructive and hypocritical.
In a series of pointed visuals, videos and cartoons, Chinese outlets framed the US narrative of “victory" as misleading even as the war continues to escalate across the region. The campaign appears designed to both criticise American military action and position Beijing as a voice of restraint amid widening instability.
One of the most striking posts came from China’s official Xinhua News Agency, which shared a split image of a children’s playground one side calm and intact, the other reduced to a burning ruin under missile fire. The caption read: “A Children’s Playground Turned into a Bloodstained Tomb," directly linking US-led military action to civilian devastation.
China’s state broadcaster CCTV took the messaging further with a cartoon showing a hospital patient symbolising the United States boasting, “We’re winning so much they are begging to negotiate." A doctor then turns to a nurse and says: “Double the dose." The cartoon was clearly aimed at mocking what Beijing sees as Washington’s inflated claims of battlefield or diplomatic success.
Another state-backed visual reportedly depicted “Uncle Sam" with an ever-growing nose, accusing the US of “buying time with a string of lies" while trying to manage both international criticism and domestic political pressure.
The messaging comes as the war itself continues to intensify. According to the report, US strikes on Iranian targets including areas near Isfahan have triggered retaliatory attacks by Tehran, including drone strikes on oil infrastructure in the Gulf. The conflict has now spread beyond Iran and Israel into Lebanon and parts of the wider Gulf, with mounting casualties and rising fears of a broader regional breakdown.
At the same time, China’s response is not just ideological, it is strategic.
Beijing depends heavily on energy flows linked to the Gulf and has repeatedly called for de-escalation, especially as the Strait of Hormuz remains under severe pressure. But while it has criticised Washington’s military posture, China has also avoided taking a fully confrontational diplomatic line, given its deep economic ties not just with Iran, but also with Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
In effect, China’s state media campaign reflects two parallel objectives: publicly undermining the US “victory" narrative while quietly reinforcing Beijing’s image as a power that benefits more from stability than escalation.
As the Iran conflict deepens, China is making clear that it sees the war not just as a military crisis but as a global test of who gets to shape the narrative.
