Serbian authorities discovered explosives near a gas pipeline connecting Serbia and Hungary on Sunday, prompting an ongoing investigation into the threat to the critical energy infrastructure.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said army and police units found two backpacks containing “two large packages of explosives with detonators" in Kanjiza, northern Serbia, just a few hundred metres from the pipeline.
Vucic called the explosives as having “devastating power" and warned they could have endangered many lives and caused significant damage to the facility.
The Serbian president also said he had informed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban of the initial findings. “Our units found an explosive of devastating power," Vucic wrote on Instagram. “I told PM Orban that we would keep him updated on the investigation."
